history. his story. another 2019 goal that i am setting for myself is the study and reopening of a louisiana supreme court case that dates back well over a century. this is americus watson. he was my great grandfather’s grandfather. his step-father’s name was thomas barber and his mother’s name was dorcus barber. americus’ son’s name was woodley. several years ago my mother told me a story about our family and the area in northern louisiana that we come from. when woodley was around 14-years old a white mob attempted to lynch him and another cousin, who was around 12 to 13-years old. both are mentioned in this case. in order to stop this from happening, americus had to sign over nearly 500 acres of land belonging to him and thomas barber. on the spot. that same afternoon. no trial. no time to hire any kind of legal defense. no right to any kind of process that resembled any kind of ‘justice’. americus later attempted to get back some of the land by raising a legal challenge in court. the case eventually made its way to the state supreme court but the handover of the land was deemed lawful and, therefore, was upheld. that story stayed lodged in my mind for a few years and recently i became interested in it again. so, i did some digging online, found a book on louisiana court cases and - lo and behold - found this very case. it was real. it actually happened. i also learned about the equal justice initiative’s somewhat recent collaboration with google at brooklyn museum which focused on lynchings around america and how they were used to grab countless acres of land and, thus, disenfranchise generations of black folks while giving poor whites a massive leg up on the socio-economic ladder. this is real. and this is what the roots of inequality in america look like. i plan to reach out to the EJI in january. if any of you out there know of any resources (especially legal) that i can utilize, please let me know. i don’t speak legal-ese but the wording in these documents is......off. really off. and confusing as hell. this is something that i would really like to explore and hopefully, eventually take up for an appeal for my mother and the rest of my family.
circle complete. a little over a year ago, i had the supreme pleasure of playing two beat sets for my friend @makayamccraven at @h0l0.nyc. that show put so much into motion.....but most importantly it spawned this amazing album being performed by this insanely talented ensemble. i’m beyond thankful for being able to take part in such a beautiful night. truth be told, we may never see this lineup again, and i’m certain that all who witnessed it knew exactly how special this night was. there are too many special moments to highlight from last evening, but i’ll lay out a few of them that really stuck out. being asked to keep playing beats for 15-20 extra minutes because there was such a huge line (wrapped around the block) waiting to come in due to all of the ticket sales was massive. there were so many joints that i made that i had been waiting to hear on a speaker system like the one at @lprnyc. being told by @spacewaysradio that he copped my album on bandcamp was uplifting, as well. meeting and briefly chopping it up with one of my true heroes @miguelatwoodferguson was incredible. and being pulled to the back by @officialmeshell (!!!) so that she could tell me how much she liked my beats and exchange information was humbling to the point of bringing me to tears. this was easily the funnest music experience that i have ever been a part of and i would especially like to thank @intlanthem & @redbullmusic for making this happen. and big pound and hug for my G @mr._desktop for linking me with these cats a year ago. alhamdulillah. all praises due. the Most High is Most Good and to be able to still make music and be able to perform it along with so many amazing artists is truly mind blowing. it really doesn’t get much better than that. 🤲🏾🕋❤️

what an oddly fantastic night. though i had heard the soundtrack and had seen plenty of clips and vividly gory still photos of the original ‘suspiria’ film, i had yet to see it in full before this evening. my first viewing was even more special given that goblin was on hand to live-score the entire film. i’ve owned a few goblin albums through the years and @claudiosimonettisgoblin’s ‘i nuovi barbari’ is still a favorite score of mine all these years after first hearing it. seeing him and the band at work while taking the film in this evening was something else entirely. left incredibly inspired and am thankful to @genggrizzly for making this evening possible. exactly what i needed. now to order some grubhub on this rainy night and rewatch this film and a few others before going to sleep. #suspiria #goblin #claudiosimonetti #cecilianappo #brunprevitali
tomorrow night. 11|21. 21:00 - 04:00. @mr._desktop + myself present to you @nydeptoflabor. this will be the first in a series of events that we will be presenting at @nublunyc. cover charge will be $10. this event is extra special & personal for me. while i was still a student at New School, the Nublu family took me in and i bounced for their Nublu 151 location from it’s opening night onward. early on, my manager there stepped outside and asked me, ‘what do you really want to do?’. working there, she had taken notice of the fact that many of the musicians & DJs coming in to play either knew me or knew of me. she eventually asked me to begin booking there. while i was intrigued, i shelved that idea for a minute. still, when it comes to life...things stay in a state of flux and recent shifts have opened the door for that possibility, again. i owe them a real debt in gratitude for believing in and supporting me. having said all of that, we’d love to have you all come out, support and spread the word about what i am certain will be a beautiful night. and we look forward to revealing our future lineups with you. be well and see you all tomorrow night. #newyorkdepartmentoflabor

so much love for this brother right here. @___sessa__ was the first friend i ever met in NYC. he’s also one of the most talented people that i know. back when i first moved here, i was accepted into the New School. i was already 30 years old and it was the first bit of “higher learning” that i had ever been exposed to. my high school education (completed a decade earlier) left a hell of a lot to be desired, and, to put it plainly, i was incredibly intimidated. i was surrounded by people who didn’t look like me, didn’t talk like me, were smarter than me and had no problem letting that be known. i honestly regretted enrolling before my first semester even started. i was certain that i wouldn’t last an entire semester....let alone four years. the first ever class that i attended was Global Perspectives in Music. i slid into the first seat that i could find, and, as fate would have it, wound up sitting right next to this guy. he turned to me, and in the thickest Brasilian accent that i had ever heard, said, ‘Hey man.....what’s up?’. haha...it could have easily been ‘como vai você’. cool as hell, yo. it’s hard to put into words how at ease i felt in that moment and we quickly became friends. we wound up sharing a helluva lot with each other and he taught me that one of my greatest contributions to others was the knowledge of records, music and life that i had amassed and not my educational upbringing. one of my great pleasures over the past 7-8 years has been witnessing his growth. musically and in life. head to YouTube and check his song ‘Toda Instância do Prazer’ if you want a taste of the magic that he has been working on down in São Paulo over the past couple of years. and, if you are so inclined, head to Berlin on Avenue A tomorrow night, where he and his band will be closing out their North American tour. their set starts at 10 pm. i unfortunately won’t be able to make it....but if you do, show him some love and tell him Malik sent you.
